Ahead of the Football Survivor and Big5 2023/24 season opener this August 12, the tipsters have been mining the data once again:

The Mailman says…

  • My pick: Newcastle will be seething after their penalty injustice in the Champions League against PSG, and will be looking to take this out on United. Their performance in their 4 – 1 demolition of Chelsea last time round in the Premiership have made them my pick for this week as well as the fact they have 6 home wins from 7 so far this season.
  • Potential pick: Arsenal are back on top of the Premiership and will be looking to make it three wins in a row against an inconsistent Wolves side who lost against Fulham after impressively beating Spurs the game before. Arsenal thrashed Wolves 5 nil in this fixture last season and will be looking to add to their tally of 27 goals so far this season.
  • Risky pick: It could be tempting to back against Everton this week after last weekend’s heavy loss to United and the club’s drama off the pitch, but they had hit some form prior to this with wins against Palace and West Ham and a draw with Brighton. While Forest are a risky pick having conceded 6 goals and losing in their last two league games.

The Teacher says…

  • My pick:Spurs may have won five of their last eight Premier League games against City but none of those was achieved with a big chunk of their team missing. Since James Maddison and Micky van de Ven limped off against Chelsea, Tottenham have lost three out of three. Cristian Romero remains suspended too and you can’t help but wonder what Erling Haaland will do against this makeshift defence.
  • Potential pick: The rewards for backing Newcastle this week look tempting. They dismantled Chelsea last week to make it six wins out of seven at St James’ Park and they’ve only lost one of their last five against United. The hosts’ have the third-best expected goals against (xGA) figure, whereas United sit 13th in that list. The Red Devils have shipped three against Arsenal, Brighton, City and the Magpies – in the League Cup – so look very beatable.
  • Risky pick: Chelsea lost both Premier League games against Brighton last season and the Seagulls are now unbeaten in five against them in this competition. Brighton have won three of six away so far, while the hosts have won only one of seven league games at Stamford Bridge and come into this off the back of a humbling at Newcastle – Reece James’ red card in that one leaves him banned. It’s hard to back them with confidence.

Incognito Pro says…

  • My pick: Newcastle looked back to their best with their convincing win over Chelsea last time round. Although Man Utd have three wins on the trot in the Premiership, they currently sit 12th in terms of goals scored, and have a Goal Difference of zero compared to Newcastle’s 17. Remember the Magpies won 3 nil against Utd a few weeks ago in the League Cup, and will be aiming for a repeat this weekend.
  • Potential pick: City need a big win this week after two draws in a row in the league, but they will be buzzing after a dramatic comeback in the Champions League against RB Leipzig and I back them to win big against a Spurs team suffering from multiple injuries and Romero still being suspended. Tottenham have lost their last three games in a row, and Man City will be looking to add to their woes.”
  • Risky pick: “Chelsea looked to have their season back on track with a win against Tottenham and their thrilling draw with City, but this came crashing down with a heavy 4 – 1 loss to Newcastle last weekend making them a risky pick this week. Brighton will also be buoyed by their dramatic away win against Forest last week, and will be hoping to repeat it against this Chelsea side.

Good luck!
