Ahead of the Football Survivor and Big5 2023/24 season opener this August 12, the tipsters have been mining the data once again:
The Mailman says…
- My pick: “Man Utd won this exact same fixture midweek comfortably and that should give them enough confidence to do it again on the weekend. The fact that a few players are coming back as well as Casemiro developing turning into an all-in-one midfielder, Utd should get the 3 points.“
- Potential pick: “Nottingham Forest have a strong chance of beating Brentford as the west London team are in shaky form without their main striker, Ivan Toney. Forest have also already beaten one team from west London this season, so should have nothing to fear.”
- Risky pick: “Despite it looking like a tight game, I feel like Liverpool might just have something up their sleeve while Spurs may be feeling overconfident after a positive result at the Emirates last Sunday.”
The Teacher says…
- My pick: “With their tails up after the 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United, Newcastle should win this. They boast the second-lowest expected goals against (xGA) figure and come up against a Burnley side, who have the lowest xG tally. The winless Clarets also have Lyle Foster – scorer of two of their four goals so far – suspended. Only Liverpool and Arsenal have won at St James’ Park since the start of 2022/23. Goal-shy Burnley won’t.“
- Potential pick: “Spurs have a poor record against Liverpool but the new broom that is Ange Postecoglou has swept much clean so far and the improvements could continue. Spurs are showing great resilience – they’ve come from behind in four of six games to remain unbeaten. They’ve had more shots than any other team this season and should exert pressure on a Liverpool team who should have lost at Newcastle and needed late goals to beat Wolves.“
- Risky pick: “The Bees were disappointing at home to Everton last week and a number of injury issues could again stifle them here. Forest have taken seven points from a possible nine against teams currently below them this season, while last term they avoided defeat at home against all of their fellow bottom-half sides, bar Bournemouth. After just one win so far, Brentford may well belong in that bracket this season so Forest look lively underdogs.“
Incognito Pro says…
- My pick: “Benefitting from their recent improvement in attacking coordination and a solid home record, Newcastle should in theory be too much for newly-promoted Burnley to handle.”
- Potential pick: “Man Utd are poised for victory against Crystal Palace this weekend due to their potent attacking trio, Casemiro in the midfield, and a historically strong record of success against mid-table teams.”
- Risky pick: “Ange Postecoglou has brought back the feel good factor back to Spurs and has galvanised the club like no other manager could do since Mauricio Pochettino.”
